Welcome to Great Room 8

Welcome to Great Room 8

Dear Friends,

I know it is hard to believe, but those hot, hazy days of “no more pencils, no more books, no more teachers’…” are almost over. I am very excited about this coming year and look forward to some great learning times together. If you are not cramming in some last minute vacationing, stop by. We remain “The Great Room 8”.

Enclosed in this envelope is a brown bag – a “ME BAG”. Please decorate and fill this bag with about 5-8 items that tell about YOU, your interests, favorites, and special talents. We will be sharing these bags during the first few days of school.

If you prefer to have your own sets of crayons, colored pencils, markers, or scissors, please bring them in. We will use colored pencils for our map work. We will also be doing extensive work throughout the year with the dictionary and thesaurus. While the paperbacks are certainly convenient, I hope that you will have access at home, as you do in school, to a more complete dictionary and thesaurus.

Instead of binders this year, we will be using 70 page spiral notebooks in different colors for different subjects. Please come to school with a red one, a blue one, a yellow one and a green one. SSR will begin immediately, so if you have a book at home that you are currently reading, or would like to read, please bring that in also on the first day. However, Room 8 has a wide selection of books that you will enjoy if you prefer to choose a new one.

Our lunch is still at 12:40, so we will continue our practice of having a 5 to 10 minute snack break during the morning. Please send in a healthy snack if you want your child to snack.

During these last few days, I would ask that you begin getting your brain in gear by contemplating some of the books that you read over the summer, reviewing those elusive multiplication facts, and pondering on the past hazy days of summer. We will be writing about your summer adventures, so don’t delete them from your memory banks.   We have some very special adventures planned for this school year, not the least of which is Nature’s Classroom scheduled for April 28-May 2.

If you have any questions, or worries, or last minute butterflies, please stop up at school and visit. You may also call me at home –203-281-3375. I’ll be glad to hear from you. If not, I’ll see you all on August 28. Stay healthy!

P.S. Please bring in a small baby picture (scanned if possible) and your summer reading assignments – (the governor’s reading challenge, and 2 “book reports”). Be sure your name is on everything. They are due on the first day.   I wonder how many will remember…J   hmmm….
